When is Repiping a House Necessary and What’s Involved in the Process?

Often times, a leak in one of your pipes can be fixed with a simple repair at a single section of your plumbing system. More serious problems, however, might require all of the pipes in your home to be replaced. This process is known as repiping a house. Today we’re going to talk about some of the most common scenarios in which you would need to repipe your home and what’s involved in the process!

When would you need to repipe your house?

Some of the most common reasons why you would need to repipe your home include:

• You live in an older home. – If your home is 50 years old or older and you’ve never replaced its pipes, there’s a good chance that you’ll need to have it done soon. Galvanized pipes were most often installed in homes of this age, and these types of pipes are known to burst and corrode when they get old.
• Your home has low water pressure. – If water doesn’t come out of your faucets as fast as it used to, it could be because your pipes are closing up due to rust or mineral buildup. Buildup like this takes a long time to accumulate, so it’s a good indication that your pipes are aging and will need to be replaced sometime soon.
• Your water is red or brown – Some types of pipes can rust over time. This rust will break off into your home’s water supply and can turn your tap water a reddish or brown color. In this case, repiping your house is necessary because not only are your pipes old, but your water quality is affected as well.
• You’ve had multiple pipe leaks. – Isolated pipe leaks can be expected from time to time in your home. But if pipe leaks are a common occurrence in your home, your pipes are likely ready to be replaced. The investment you make in repiping your house will pay off in the future because you’ll avoid the costs of frequent plumbing repairs and you’ll also save water.

What’s involved in repiping a house?

In order to repipe your home, we will need to remove small sections of your drywall so we can access and replace your pipes. Depending on the size of your home, this process will likely take a few days to a week to complete. Don’t worry, while we’re working on your home we’ll cover all of your furniture, floors and other belongings so that our work doesn’t make a mess. After the entire process is finished and your home is cleaned up, we’ll test to ensure that water is flowing properly through all of your new pipes.
